“You can’t be what you can’t see” is a phrase used to explain in part why women are underrepresented in the Stem disciplines (science, technology, engineers and maths). Without female role models women and girls are less likely to pursue a Stem career.

A KINSALE based environmental scientist is joining 80 women from around the world on an expedition to Antarctica.
Dr Tara Shine, co–founder of Plastic Free Kinsale and the award winning social enterprise Change by Degrees, left Ireland on the 27th of December to join the select group of female scientists from around the world on the leadership expedition to what’s one of the most ecologically sensitive places on earth.Tara, an advisor on climate change, is the first woman living in Ireland to be selected for the programme.

Tara was asked by the Environmental Protection Agency to be Ambassador for The Story of Your Stuff Competition in 2019.
The Story of Your Stuff is an EPA competition for second level students aimed at highlighting sustainability, climate action and environmental protection. Second level students are invited to use their creative talents to visually tell a story about the environment, such as investigate the life cycle of their everyday ‘stuff’ which could be an object or an activity. Tara was pleased to be an Ambassador for the event and to meet the finalists at their showcase event.

Waging a war against plastic in their town. When two concerned mums from Kinsale posted a video to social media in early February, discussing which items of common household plastic were suitable for recycling, the video went viral nationwide and generated more than 205,000 views.
